George Nelson was born in Connecticut, USA, in 1908. He attended Yale University and studied Fine Arts. During his career he worked for Herman Miller and collaborated with Vitra. His design style is very playful and innovative and he had a unique ability to envision what was not yet created.

The best known George Nelson designs include the 1955 Coconut Chair, inspired by a piece of coconut shell, as well as the Marshmallow Sofa which is another revolutionary George Nelson design, with its seat and back made of small round individual cushions. He is also much known for his wall clocks, designed for the Howard Miller Clock Company, of which the best known is the Ball Clock.
